The Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is operated by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey since March 22, 1948 and was inaugurated on October 1, 1928. It was the metropolitan region's first major airport and was built by the City of Newark on 68 acres of marshland. The Airport now consists of 2,027 acres with over 24,000 employees. The Newark Liberty International Airport had a total of 240,938 passengers in the year 2003.
Terminal A with 27 gates and Terminal B with 23 gates each branch out into three circular satellite aircraft gate buildings designated as A-1, A-2, A-3 and B-1, B-2, B-3 respectively. The satellites in Terminals A and B contain flight departure lounges, and airline and passenger service facilities. The lower level is used for operations activities. International flights arrive in Terminal B and C, but may depart from Terminal A, B, or C.
