The Essex County Fair was first organized by Elkanah Watson in 1848. Horse racing, was the most important event in the early years of the fair and is still a component of the fair. Apart from the Carnival and the rides, The South Lawn Entertainment Area Events host many shows such as the Two by Two Petting Zoo, Double Jay's Frog Jumping Show, and the Doc Swan. Some of the Grandstand Events are as follows: Harness Racing with performances from the Upstate New Yorkers, Egglefield Ford Demolition Derby, and the Teen Music Festival. The Eating and Drinking Contest include: Cracker Eating Contest Sponsored by Pizza; Wings and Things; Pudding Eating Contest Sponsored by Midway Diner; Ice Cream Eating Contest; Milk Drinking Contest. The Fair takes place during the summer time in the month of August.

The Essex County Fair is located across the road from the Westport train station on Main Street (formerly N. Pleasant Street), Route 9N in Westport, New York.
Directions from Interstate 87: Take Interstate 87 to Exit 31. Go east at the stop sign onto Route 9N. Proceed approximately 4 miles towards the Hamlet of Westport. The Essex County Fair is located on the left just after the railroad overpass.
Directions from the Crown Point Bridge: After crossing the bridge into New York, turn right at the stop sign, and head North on Route 9N for 12 miles. Once in Westport, veer left at junction of Routes 9N and 22. The fairgrounds will be on your right, less than a mile, just before the railroad overpass.
